During the last year the production of Gorgonzola cheese has grown by 0.45% compared to 2012 for a total of 4.17561 million cheeses produced. The sweet Gorgonzola cheese represents 91% of production, but the consumer’s interest for the ‘spicy’ version continues to grow.
The Gorgonzola that can boast the DOP is produced exclusively from cow's milk from only two Italian regions: Lombardy and Piedmont. The production in the provinces of Piedmont (Novara, Vercelli, Cuneo, Biella, Verbano-Cusio-Ossola and the territory of Casale Monferrato) represents 66.5% of the total, but the volumes of ‘Made in Lombardy’ Gorgonzola (Bergamo , Brescia , Como , Cremona , Lecco , Lodi, Milan, Monza , Pavia and Varese) are increasing.
In 2013 over 16,000 tons of product (+5.1%) have been exported. France and Germany count for over 46% of the total export. Export has increased towards China, Russia and ex Soviet Countries too.
