Venice takes advantage again of the strategic position it had over the centuries in the trade between East and West. And it does it by investing in a new logistics harbour structure for the storage, processing and distribution of fresh or perishable products, or which require special storage conditions (fruit and vegetables, cheeses, dairy products, wine and spirits, white lines and pharmaceutical products). Venice Green Terminal is strategically located at the intersection of three European transport corridors: from the Mediterranean Sea to Northern Europe, and to Eastern Europe and the East. The two latter sections will be enhanced in the next coming months and have already found both requests and interest by Italian exporters.
The structure This facility covers 10 thousand square metres, 7 thousand refrigerated square metres for fresh products, and 3 thousand square metres dedicated to traditional products. It has six refrigerating rooms: 5 with a specific temperature (5 x 400 pallet places = 2,000 pallet places on three levels with ‘drive-in high cube’ system for 2.6 metres in height) and a giant room (1 x 5,000 pallet places; picking for ID / REF Number - automated mobile shelving on 5 levels at different heights)
VGT is structured in order to be able to store the products up to ten different temperatures (range from -2 ° to + 13 ° C) and has automatic control systems. The terminal has 9 bays, able to operate in a contemporary way in the operations of loading and unloading. It can handle 600 pallets per hour. It has ‘DDP’ bonded warehouses, able to guarantee any type of customs status (domestic goods, foreign state, VAT warehouse, and in the near future Free Port activities)’.
Controls and traceability VGT has a system of controls and monitoring through a system of traceability on goods as well as stored or in transit products, including:
- Health checks at the Import of products for human consumption or contact
- Checks concerning plant protection products on imports and exports, in order to guarantee against the introduction and spread of pests
- Controls at both import and export stages, in order to guarantee the quality of products in compliance with regulations in terms of size, quality, labelling, packaging.
- Veterinary check at the export stage, in order to ensure the quality of products of animal origin exported from the EU.
